Ruffwear Book Review: Dog Obsessed

The Honest Kitchen is where foodies and pet lovers come together, using whole foods to create human-grade, dehydrated pet foods. Our friends at The Honest Kitchen recently sent us their new book, Dog Obsessed: The Honest Kitchen’s Complete Guide to a Happier, Healthier Life for the Pup You Love. Created by The Honest Kitchen’s Founder, Lucy Postins, Dog Obsessed is inspired the all-consuming desire that many of us feel to care for our dogs just like family.

Dog Obsessed

Dog Obsessed serves as a guide to giving your best furry pal the happiest, healthiest life you can. From more than 50 recipes, to tips, secrets, vet-approved advice, and a two-week health and fitness plan, Dog Obssessed is a lighthearted lifestyle guide that covers all aspects of health and happiness. It kicks off with The Guiding Principles of The Dog Obsessed (there are five) and covers dog personalities, food and food sensitivities, finding the right vet, birthday and celebration ideas, traveling, games, and more.

It might go without saying that we at Ruffwear were excited to explore Dog Obsessed, and in particular, to try out some recipes with our canine friends. Below, you’ll find a few recipes that our Community & Events Specialists, Alli and Riggins, sampled and shared with our pack. We paraphrased the recipes because Dog Obsessed is so much more than a recipe book, and we hope you’ll check it out for yourself (Hint: It would make a great stocking stuffer!). However, we did include the list of ingredients and a general idea of how these easy-to-make recipes come together (and then quickly disappear!).

We hope your mouth waters as much as our dogs’ did.

The Recipes

Bacon Berry Pancakes

The Bacon Berry Pancakes were the first recipe we tried, because let’s face it, making pancakes is always fun and making them for your dog is even better! Here are the ingredients:

1 cup The Honest Kitchen Love dehydrated dog food
1 1/2 cups warm water
2 free-range eggs, beaten
2 slices bacon, cooked and chopped
1/2 cup millet flour
1/4 cup fresh strawberries, finely chopped

Combine the ingredients and cook them in a large skillet, just like you would with human pancakes. Riggins is not usually a drooler, but he had two strings of drool coming out each side of his mouth while I was cooking these! Once they cooled, I served them up and I was a little shocked by how quickly he devoured them. I’d say the Bacon Berry Pancakes were an overwhelming success! Riggins and I brought the rest to work and passed them around to the office dogs, who loved them just as much as Riggins did.

Superfood Cupcakes

These turkey-flavored cupcakes are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Don’t wait for a reason to celebrate! The Superfood Cupcakes are so easy to whip together, any excuse will do. These irresistible treats include:

1 cup The Honest Kitchen Embark dehydrated dog food
1 cup warm water
1/2 cup shredded chard (tough stalks removed)
1/2 cup canned unsweetened pumpkin (not pie mix)
1/2 cup fresh blueberries
1 free-range egg, beaten
2/3 cup plain yogurt
2 slices bacon, cooked and finely chopped

Combine everything, except the yogurt and bacon, and then bake them in a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners. Once they cool, add the yogurt as icing and the bacon as sprinkles. I scooped the yogurt onto the muffins with a spoon.

Note: Be sure to remove the paper liner before presenting this treat to your dog! I was so excited about the presentation, and Riggins was so excited to eat it, I couldn’t stop him before he gulped down his first cupcake in one bite, paper and all. Oops.

The Superfood Cupcakes were also a huge hit around the office. Even the humans were eyeing them!

Halloween Pumpkin Ginger Nibbles

These grain-free treats are great for pups throughout the year, and both pumpkin and ginger can soothe upset tummies. Here’s the full list of ingredients:

1 cup The Honest Kitchen Love dehydrated dog food
1 cup warm water
1 cup lean ground beef
1/2 cup mashed, cooked pumpkin
2 tablespoons honey
1/4 cup cream cheese
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 free-range egg, beaten

Combine all of the ingredients, then roll them into balls, place on a baking sheet, and pop them in the oven! The Pumpkin Ginger Nibbles make a great treat anytime, anywhere.

Probiotic Mini Chicken Meatballs

This tasty recipe uses The Honest Kitchen Pro Bloom instant goat’s milk, which contains more than 5 billion active culture probiotics and digestive enzymes to balance digestive upsets and boost overall health. Start by cooking 1 pound of ground chicken and letting it cool. Then add:

1 cup The Honest Kitchen Force dehydrated dog food
1/4 cup Pro Bloom instant goat’s milk
1 cup warm water
2 free-range eggs, beaten
3 tablespoons roughly chopped basil
1/2 cup fresh blueberries

I rolled the mixture into balls and since they were a little soft and sticky, I placed them on a baking sheet in the freezer overnight. In the morning, I put them in a glass jar and took them to the office, where Riggins and I shared them with the rest of the Ruffwear office dogs. They must have been popular, because they were gobbled up almost immediately!

Baked Chicken and Kale

img_9541

After all this cooking for Riggins and the other Ruffwear office dogs, I was craving a home-cooked meal for myself! Fortunately, I didn’t need to look very far. At the back of Dog Obsessed is a selection of recipes that can shared by humans and dogs together! There’s even a suggested wine pairing for us humans. I tried the Baked Chicken and Kale, which was delicious – I will admit, Riggins and I did not receive equal portions! The ingredients for this recipe include:

1 pound free-range boneless, skinless chicken breasts or fillets, cut into bite-size pieces
1 bunch kale, chopped (tough stalks removed)
1 handful fresh basil, torn into strips
1 drizzle runny honey (optional)
2 cloves garlic (optional)

Humans can add some boiled new potatoes or crusty French bread on the side, and the suggested wine pairing for this recipe is Vermentino. I wanted the full experience, so I included the honey and garlic, cooked some potatoes and found the recommended wine at my neighborhood market. It was crisp, tart, and delicious – a great accompaniment to the chicken, kale, and potatoes. I can’t say that Riggins savored his meal as much as I did, but he certainly enjoyed it in the 1-2 moments it took him to clean his plate! Unfortunately, we didn’t have any leftovers from this meal to share with the rest of the Ruffwear office.
